Economic structure

Schwibbögen (decorative arched candle holders) and Räuchermännchen (carved incense holders in the shape of little men) have made the Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains) known throughout the world. Less well known is its importance as a location for industry and technology. As a result of the technological and scientific foundations laid by the mining industry over the centuries, including its former use of water power from rivers down in the valleys, the Erzgebirgskreis (Ore Mountains district) developed from a mining region into a business region. Commercial life in the new Erzgebirgskreis benefits from a widely diversified economic structure. Craft, industry, trade, services and tourism provide a balanced economic mix. The Erzgebirge is a recognised business location with an emphasis on metalworking and polymer processing, tool manufacture, machine engineering, electrical engineering and the textile industry. This economic diversity has been growing and prospering for centuries. Above all, it thrives on one catalyst for innovative ability in particular: the people of the Erzgebirge themselves.
