Did you know that the highest town in Germany is in the Erzgebirge? This title belongs to the spa town of Oberwiesenthal on Fichtelberg mountain. Every winter, thousands of winter sports enthusiasts make a pilgrimage to the 1,215 metre high mountain. They appreciate the varied skiing pistes and cross-country ski tracks, as well as sporty snowkite and halfpipe routes.
The most well known resident is the several times Olympic ski jump champion Jens Weißflog. Throughout the Erzgebirge, there are delightful stretches of land inviting you to enjoy lengthy skiing expeditions. The region offers around 1,000 kilometres of marked tracks, including one of the most beautiful tracks in the land, the Kammloipe, which is also one of the most likely to be snow-covered. The German Skiing Association awarded it a rating of "Excellent Track".
